Freight Forwarding - What is it?

Freight Forwarding is where a forwarder acts as a direct representative on behalf of a company to arrange collection and dispatch of shipments.

A freight forwarding service provider arranges transportation via air, ocean, road or rail. They will also negotiate to ensure space is available so that shipments are received on time.

Freight Forwarding companies are used to send shipments all over the world by businesses that import and export globally. The forwarder will also manage the documentation required and ensure the movement of goods is legal and will not be delayed by customs. Typical documentation required may include commercial invoices, shipper’s export documents, bills of lading, packing lists and any additional information required by the carrier.

A freight forwarding service usually involves a quotation which will list a breakdown of charges in detail for the freight shipment, and includes any special requirements, screening fees or surcharges needed for the freight.

The advantages to using a freight forwarding service are that it can save a customer time and money, as the freight forwarding company has stronger buying power with the air and shipping lines.

Forward looking. Forward thinking.
